    Hi,

I am renting this apartment for the last 3 years, every year i have to do a serious spring cleaning. And this involves washing off mold from walls, ceiling, furniture and everything else which is placed near to the whole wall that is facing the outside of the building. I am living with my wife and 3 year old son and come December will be expecting my daughter. I just found out today that from browsing through the topics in Flatchat that this is a common problem.

The unit i am in is one the first level facing the common yard and pool, which is on a busy main road. Previously, i have requested to the landlord to install fly screen onto our doors and windows. It was rejected with no reason provided, i assume it will cost them money. We bought those DIY nets that you can clip onto the window frames so we can open the windows without letting in mosquitoes, bugs, spiders and all stinging insect into our unit. Exception to the sliding door which there is not DIY item i can find for it. We even risk our life by climbing out to the windows whilst installing the nets. As parents we do it because do not want to see our baby face swell up like a Klingon after being stung by a mosquito.

Last winter was the coldest we had, and as expected mold was everywhere, in our master bedroom, second room and living room. We have to throw out our pillows, bedsheet, clothes, books, toys, bags because i can’t wash them off.

And to think my 3 yr old was sleeping on top of full grown mold which is yellow and blue in color in the winter.

I would like to request proper mosquito netting is install on the sliding door. so we can open the sliding door during winter and not the windows because of bubs sleeping in the rooms.

Now i have read the Factsheet and would like to know what is the best way to approach this. Will the owner say that we did not air the place enough which causes the mold to grow? which is almost true because we can only open up the windows in the day, at night all doors and windows are fully shut as it got down to 4 degrees at night.

    Please some one do advise.

    Hi Johnchan,

I am unsure  why you are considering even staying in an apartment that requires annual mould cleaning from one wall (doesn’t that tell you the wall itself is the issue) and whatever other cleanin you ‘have’ to do!

Is your rent very low or even free? As it’s a veritable death-trap your living in.

Considering you have young children, I would suggest you look to rent elsewhere for a property that doesn’t have such problems to avoid harm to you children’s lungs etc.

A fly screen is the least of your worries mate! Do yourself and your family a favour and find somewhere were moisture is not an issue. Your landlord and the OC ought to be ashamed of themselves!!

    Thom
