Hello Flat Chat, my question relates to security cameras, who has permsission to view, under what circumstances and when. I live in a self managed strata community – no strata manager.

The Strata Committee is your cardigan brigade from central casting. Now it’s getting a bit scary – the cardigan brigade pop up all over the place – when i’m in the garage late at night. Out early in the mornings. They’re pretty feral and are freaking me out.

Yes i have put in complaints that they should write to me etc – but they seem to think that they have the ‘right’ to pop up whenever they like.

Recently the Chairman was waiting for me ‘in the recesses’ of the car park and jumped out at me. They can only know this my watching the cameras.

I’ve had a good read through strata regs as well as they surveillance act but there seems nothing about this. Are there regs or acts which i can look too.

Put a motion to your next committee meeting that they let everyone know where the cameras are, who has access to the feeds, whether or not you are being recorded and why they are there anyway.

If nothing else, it’s one way to get everything out in the open.

Thanks for reply much appreciated.  It’s not so much as where the cameras are. We agree they should be in the garage – but not that the ‘cardigan brigade’ that makes up our self managed strata sit around and watch the cameras (under the guise of ‘security’) then come and pounce on you when they see you for example putting your bins out.  I appreciate they are there as a meausre that you can go back and look if there is an incident – but not as entertainment.  I thought there was something specific about this in the regs.

There’s nothing in the regs and very little in the privacy laws either (especially if you are only recording video and not sound).

Cameras could only be legally fitted via a by-law and that should have included your scheme’s own rules about who can view the vision and when.

That’s your point of attack, right there.
