3 weeks ago, I wrote to the landlord asking to renew the lease, as the term was up in 8 weeks. Nothing heard back. I sent another email about a broken stove 3 weeks later and he responded by coming around to take a look and fiddles around with it. On his way out, he handed me a termination notice with 30 days notice. I was completely shocked as we thought we had been perfect tenants, never once having any problems with him or anyone else in the building, which he owns.

His parting words were, “Whatever happens, the rent will be going up to 20%.

We feel completely shafted and has come at the worst possible time for my Husband and I. Is this how Landlords act to get increased rents by putting tenants in this situation……Leave or pay what i want?

What, if any recourse can be taken to prevent him from forcing us out like this?

The thing is – the lease was coming up for renewal anyway, at which point he was within his rights to put up the rent and you would have had to accept that or move out.  Which is basically what he has done.

Landlords can charge whatever rent they want whenever a lease comes up for renewal.

I am sorry this has come at a bad time for you, but you don’t have any recourse.
