Oh, and KP, please do us all a favour and use the spellcheck button (top right of the space you are writing in).  We all make mistakes – I know I do – but as a courtesy to other readers, as sa frequent and welcome contributor to this forum,  please make an effort.  Thanks

Heavens above JimmyT! I think you might have lost the aforesaid button yourself.

It took me five minutes to spot it but, yes, the literal is there and I won’t edit it out as a reminder of my own shame.

There’s an old principle in journalism called Muphrys Law – which is that, in trying to correct someone else’s mistake you invariably make one yourself.

The most commonly quoted example is the newspaper that had messed up when trying to describe a retired military leader as “battle-scarred”.

        The apology went something like:

“In yesterday’s edition we referred to General So-and-so as being “bottle-scarred”.  Obviously we intended to say “battle-scared” and apologise for any embarrassment caused.”

I have worked on several newspapers that all claimed to have run that story.  I think it’s an urbane myth.

Oh, and there should have been a comma after “heavens above”.

Entertaining & informative. Flat Chat is a great improvement on the newspaper I stopped reading, when it became a shadow of its former self. Thank you JimmyT.

Murphy’s Law – anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

            Urban myth.

Muphry’s Law is the variation related to mistakes in newspapers.

Urbane was a deliberate mistake … but then I would say that.Wink

Your version of Murphy’s law was very obviously deliberate JimmyT. By the way, I have asked Choice to include strata managers among their subjects & pointed them to this web site, along with your name as its administrator. I hope you or the others don’t mind.

yes I know my spelling is AWFUL but for some reason the spellchecker button or alt + Shift + N doesn’t work on my home m/c on your web site (but works fine on every other site I visit). I know it’s my m/c because I’m on a different m/c now and it’s spell checking as I type.

I use Firefox both now and at home and so their must be some setup wrong or maybe an upgrade missing at home. I’ll try at home using IE (aargh). Your spell checker is trying to spell check that.

                  Sorry.

                    Your efforts are appreciated.

I gave up on Firefox a while ago because their incessant upgrades stuffed up all the other software that was browser dependent, at least until they upgraded too … and then there was another Firefox upgrade.  And as for Internet Explorer, I agree … aaaaaargh!

This site is built and managed on Chrome which seems to just get on with the job and I wouldn’t willingly use any other browser now (although I do have to use IE for the Australian Tax Office website, for some reason).  Give it a try … but be prepared to be seduced into Google’s version of the Apple ‘walled garden’.

I inadvertently sidetracked  discussion on contractors by asking a valued contributor to use their spell check.  I have now shifted the ensuing discussion on spellchecks and browsers to here.  Scroll down and start from the bottom to read it all.

My spelling should be perfect now I’ve upgraded Firefox 19 (which had the problem) to Firefox 26 which doesn’t (fingers crossed).
