I’m not a great believer in “acceptable” levels of noise in apartments. What’s acceptable for some is intolerable to others. However, you seem to have reached a level of compromise and accommodation with most of your neighbours and that’s to be applauded. One of the factors that the CTTT takes into account when remaining these issues is how noisy the building is as a whole so your remarks about “ambient” noise are relevant. Another thing to consider is that some people, as they get older, become more sensitive to noise – they are genuinely disturbed my levels of noise that wouldn’t bother you or me. My advice would be to try to arrange a mediation through your local Community Justice Centre (it’s a free service) to try to find out what the problem really is. Failing that, tell this neighbour to take this to Fair Trading and that you will comply with the whole process and whatever decision they reach. But bear in mind that because someone hasn’t complained previously it doesn’t mean there wasn’t a problem before. They may have been bottling it up and finally decided to say something. The last straw that breaks the camel’s back is, after all, just a straw.
