Evening all,
I’ve got a hopefully simple issue I’d like some clarification with, sorry it comes in such a lengthy post.
I recently moved into a brand new apartment as a tenant. Listed on the lease is myself and my partner. We’re also living with a teen (not listed on the lease) registered with the realtor.
The unit is a ground floor two bed unit with direct street access through a gate and a terrace door.
When we viewed the apartment we entered directly from the street and were told it was being used by the building as the ‘handover’ location for all the owners to collect their keys. Present at the time of viewing was one of the builders and a number of packs containing the keys to basically every unit in the building.
Handover was completed on a Thursday and we picked up our keys from the realtor on Friday.
What we picked up was One swipe access key, Two front door keys and One mailbox key. I asked about other keys and was told another was coming (I’ve since learnt the realtor was only referring to a swipe access key).
When I entered the unit there was a key to the windows in bed one in the actual lock. The windows in bed two were locked shut, no keys.
I waited a week with nothing from the realtor before I began emailing about more keys to the unit. The realtor stated she had spoken to strata and more keys were on order (Where i learnt she only meant the swipe card). When I pressed her about the street access gate key, terrace door key or window keys she had no idea what I was talking about and stated she’d speak with the building manager.
I waited another week with nothing. I pressed again and got the info of the building manager. I asked the building manager about the issue and he stated all keys were provided on handover and we should have been provided two swipe access keys.
I again emailed my realtor. She stated all the keys they had were provided to me. They had nothing left to give.
I again emailed the building manager. He attended the unit and looked at each of the doors. The front door key was not universal and different keys were needed for the terrace door and gate. He stated the keys to the windows should have been in the locks (which seems to highlight a flaw, because If I havnt signed for these keys, I dont have to return them) He asked me to provide him with our realtors details and he’d chase it up. I did that.
I waited another week. I’ve just emailed him to see where its at. I’m now looking into what I need to do.
We have been in the unit 1 month now. In that month we’ve been operating with one swipe card between the three of us. We all have considerably different schedules with mine being rotating shift work.
This issue has so far caused me to be late for work (because I cant leave for work until someone returns home) and cost my partner an entire days work when I was hospitalized recently (because I couldn’t return home to the unit and get in without her there.)
If we had all the keys one swipe card would be fine. One of the major pluses of the unit was we didnt need three swipe cards and could get away with street access to the unit and simply copy the key for the teen. It is quicker than going through the building and easier. As it stands we cant even leave from that door as the doors cannot be locked externally.
Can someone tell me whose problem this is? I feel I’ve been more than patient (one month so far..). I understand its a new building and there are teething issues but I’m sick of chasing something up that I dont feel was my issue to begin with.
My most recent email to the building manager was in short stating if he couldnt blame my realtor for not having the keys (ie; handover said they got ALL the keys) it was his problem and new locks or whatever would need to be sorted.
If he can pass the blame to the realtor, Is it reasonable for me to demand all keys to the property be supplied (via the street access gate) if it comes at their cost when I have access to the unit via the front door?
What else do I or should I do?
Any help appreciated.
