Topic: Advice needed on best plants (shallow roots) to save garden bed waterproofing

Location: Sydney

Our apartment block is 22 years old.
Water leaks from individual apartment garden beds are gradually getting worse.
The main cause has been plant roots penetrating garden bed waterproofing.

One possible plan is to limit the type of plants in the garden bed to plants with shallow root systems.
A problem with this plan is lack of knowledge identifying appropriate plants.
Does anyone know a source for this information or a company that specializes in problems like this?

Also, as garden beds are now popular in buildings, has anyone else developed a solution to this problem?

We would be grateful for any help.

Shallow rooted plants might be a temporary fix to slow the rate at which things get worse but it seems to me the problem is fundamentally insufficient waterproofing of the garden beds.
