Your article in the AFR made no mention of Insurance issues with EV housed in a strata carpark. Unexpected combustion seems to be an issue.

What guidelines are Underwriters offering ? Do Strata schemes have to advise details of charging outlets and actual EV’s in the carpark, whether they are being charged or not ? I understand that fires can occur without a charge being in operation ?

I would like to get this issue out in the open to ensure that when problems such as carpark fires occur that Strata Committees know exactly where they stand with their insurers. I often say that an Insurance Company issues an A-4 piece of paper acknowledging the existence of a ‘paid up policy’, then issues a 300 page document explaining why they are rejecting your claim (the actual policy wording).

The numbers of fires per 100,000 electric vehicles is about 5-fold fewer than for ICE vehicles. I can’t see how an OC could be held liable for housing road registered vehicles that comply with Australian Design Rules in their car park. I have never seen any suggestion that I could not park my electric car in any public car park. Why would a private strata car park need more stringent restrictions?  If insurers were concerned, I think they would have an exclusion already or they would be asking their policy holders.
