Good afternoon all, I hope you’re all well!
I’m currently renting in Victoria.
I’ve previously rented in London where I haven’t had the requirement for Fly Screens in any property I’ve lived in but know they’re big here. I was tasked with looking for a property and inadvertently signed for one, which I later realised, doesn’t have them! I know we’re coming into Summer and they’re a very useful addition. I asked the Property Manager to ask the landlord for them!
Also, our front door doesn’t have a deadbolt lock, so I asked the Property Manager to ask the landlord for one.
I left it four weeks before I followed up for a response to be told our landlord is currently overseas and is not willing to do anything.
I’m hoping to get some information as to where I stand with regards to the law for these two issues? I’d be very grateful for any guidance.

First off, I advise any tenants and, indeed, landlords to go to the Tenants Union website (tenants.org.au) where you will find a stack of fact sheets covering both tenants and landlords obligations. You might want to have a look at this one which is about locks and security.
Regarding the fly-screen, I suspect you might need to install that yourself and then make sure any damage to the window is repaired before you leave. Have a look at this Factsheet from Fair Trading about the best way to proceed.
