Why Do I Have To Register?

One problem with running a forum like this is that it can be a fertile ground for spammers, hackers, abusive trolls and other nasties.

To protect ourselves and our readers, we need to know that you have a real operating email address with a human being at the end of it.  It’s as simple as that.

Also, by registering, you become part of a wider Flat Chat community (Flatchatters, if you like) which will allow you to communicate with each other and to receive my very irregular newsletters.

What won’t happen, ever, is that your details will be passed on to a third party without your specific permission.

What if I don’t register?

You are free to read everything and anything on this website but you won’t be able to ask or answer questions. Also, if you don’t register separately for the weekly Newsletter, you won’t get it.

How do I register?

Firstly, click on the register button on the side panel. It will open a page that will ask for your username and email address.

Please don’t use your actual name or email address as your username. Anonymity is an important part of this website – for you and for us – so choose a username that means something to you. Obviously, your email address has to be your actual email address.

When you have done that, check your emails and you will get a link from this website that invites to to a page where you can choose your own password. Again, a little effort will improve your and our online security.

Choose a USERNAME that’s short and easy to remember as this will always be the name you type in when you log on in future. And write it and your password down or save it in document file on your computer (or both).

Please don’t use your real name.

If you identify yourself, you are also identifying people with whom you may be in dispute and that could lead to trouble for you and us.

Once you have registered, you can always change your screen name or nickname – the one that appears above your posts – to something more exotic in your Profile page.

Most browsers will allow you to save your login details so that they  populates the boxes automatically every time you come back to the site.

Logging on is different from registering.

You only need to register once but you have to log on with your username and password every time if you want to  post a question or answer or edit your profile!

Changing your profile

Once you are signed up and logged on, you can tell us more about yourself and this is also where you can change your username to something  more exotic (or less identifiable).
