We got a posting on the forum this week from a tenant in flats near UNSW. He was assured before he moved in that the block was very strictly run but has since discovered that students in the building party into the wee small hours in the pool next to his bedroom
He’s sick of having to get up and chuck the miscreants out every other night (the pool’s supposed to be closed at 8pm) and calls to the strata manager’s emergency phone line don’t stop the problem from re-occurring.
He wanted to know if this was a valid reason to break his rental contract without paying the penalty fee for early cancelation.
Possibly, and he should check with Fair Trading (13 32 20). But why be driven out of your home?
This pool could easily be locked down – electronic keys, security cameras, timers on the lights – and the landlord has a responsibility (and the means, via the executive committee) to get it done.
Summer is on the way it’s in the landlord’s interests to get this fixed pronto or the value of this property will sink faster than tequila shots at a pool party.
