A Sydney tenant is not allowed to let her friends park in visitors parking because, it seems, she’s only a renter.
Inner City Walker wrote to Flat Chat complaining that although she doesn’t have a car, her flatmate does and therefore she has the remote control for the garage gate.
“I legitimately want access to the visitor spaces for short term visitors, and to get my bicycle in and out of the garage,” complains ICW. “I have enquired with both the strata and my real estate about getting a code for the gate but both deny that one exists even though I have seen other people use one.
“They also stated that I wouldn’t be able to get my own garage remote. Do I have a right to access use these facilities? Is there anything I can say to my strata to convince them to give me access?”
As a tenant, ICW is entitled to exactly the same level of access as everyone else in the building.
She should tell the rental agent that if they don’t produce the code everyone else uses, she will take the landlord to Fair Trading (Tel 13 32 20) to force them to get the code or a spare remote control.
