I planned to attend the meeting of our Executive Committee tonight to listen but I’ve discovered it’s at our local pub. Should have read the notice more closely. I assumed it’d be in someone’s unit or a common area or at our strata manager’s office.
We’re 38 apartments, our lot pays $1,200 a quarter in fees; there are two or three important projects being ‘discussed’ tonight, one’s a big job which will cost the Owners Corporation roughly a hundred grand.
I like a drink in a pub as much as the next owner and I know there’s very little joy to be had at Executive Committee meetings (paid my dues), but holding one in a pub?! This seems completely wrong and I confess to being shocked. Is it OK or is it just me.

If the pub has a quiet corner booth, a convenient location and a more congenial atmosphere for the EC than anyone’s unit, then sounds OK to me.
In our EC some members have small units with nowhere else for a partner to go to avoid the meeting or young children being fed and put to bed around meeting time. So, some units are not ideal. The managing agent’s office is not especially close. With a slightly different EC composition we might well want to look to a nearby pub or cafe for a place to meet.
Provided it’s not in a public bar where everyone else can hear and there are all the usual distractions, it’s not that different from holding it in a private residence with beer and wine on offer.
And on that topic, I know of schemes that don’t allow the wine to be opened until the last item on the agenda has been voted on. Not only does it maintain the calibre of the discussion, it makes the meeting shorter.
How about raising that as a point of order: Alcohol may not be consumed at the meeting until the last item has been discussed.

We hold our AGMs in a pub, it’s in an area away from other people and noise. It’s a neutral venue as I used to have meetings at my place, but didn’t like people nosing around.
Nobody has a drink, even after the proceedings – perhaps we should.
