We have recently had new gates installed around or property of 12 units in Melbourne. They are fitted with a lever handle to exit, which has a key lock in it, and now after 1 months use, the lock has jammed and everyone has to use a key to unlock the gate to get out to the street.
This is incredibly frustrating and inconvenient to need a key every time I want to go out and am concerned that in an emergency I might not be able to get out.
OC manager says since we are a class 1A property, our gates “comply”. He obviously doesn’t have to get a key out every time he leaves his own house!
Also, because our committee hired a fly by night gate contractor, they are unable or unwilling to get him return to site to fix any problems we have.
what rights do I have? surely being locked in is a safety issue?
