Hi there,
I’ve just started renting an apartment in a high-rise complex in Sydney. It is about 9 years old, so I figured it would be well soundproofed and all. However, I hear every footstep from upstairs and in-particular, then is one spot that is creaking and is quite loud. I don’t know if it is the original flooring or not, but it doesn’t seem to be sound-proofed at all. Pretty sure it is timber flooring.
I have been woken up in the middle of the night by something falling and bouncing. I hear drawers and cupboards opening and closing in the morning.
I have bought some earplugs so at least I can get a decent nights sleep.
Not sure what my course of action should be or if it is something I have to just suck it up for the remainder of the lease.

You’re first step is to notify your landlord/property, manager. Tell them the situation.
Request that they have the strata rectify the problem ( that’s going to take some time)
Ask for a rent reduction for the in convenience or ask to terminate the lease because of the noise.
Mention, politely that you will seek an order from fair trading for either a rent reduction or a termination of the lease.
Allow the landlord about two weeks for a response, then go to fair trading
