As an apartment owner in Sydney, I appreciate reading your column in the Weekend Fin Review. Our Body Corporate committee is well organized and other residents are well-behaved and always seek approvals etc for renovations.
But recently one owner advised that 2 painters would be coming to her apartment last Saturday and Sunday to paint the walls before her new carpet went down.
No-one seemed to mind this – they were masked and quiet and finished by about 10.00am on Sunday. But one elderly owner has said to me that “the rules say all tradesmen should finish their work by noon on Saturdays and never work on Sundays”. She was quite convinced about this.
Could you please advise if this is the case and where I might find such a rule? NSW Gov or my local Council perhaps? We’ve certainly had other tradies working in our building over the years on weekends. It suits our working couples to have them come in then, for one thing.

Environmental Protection (via local councils) has limits on noisy work or use of power tools, but they are basically not too early in the morning at weekends and not too late at night on weekdays, although each council may have its own rules.
Most strata schemes have their own by-laws on this. For many it restricts work to during the day on weekdays (8am to 5pm), not after midday on Saturdays and not at all on Sundays.
But this differs from strata scheme to strata scheme.
It may well be that your neighbour has heard about a by-law in another scheme and assumed it was a universal rule.
