Hi,
I am currently renting a flat in North Shore and the unit is on the ground floor of an art deco building.
A couple of weeks ago, my unit was broken into via the windows in the main bedroom (windows located in the back of the building). (PS. I was away for the weekend so was not around when it happened)
Last week, I have been told by my real estate agents that the owners and strata management are in discussion on how to make my unit secure (mine is the only unit considered to be ground floor – other units are elevated ground floor) by adding security bars on the windows.
As mentioned, it is an art deco building and to add security bars to the windows, the whole window frame needs to be replaced as they are very rusty and very old. How can I be assured that this is truly being discussed as I am ready to move out and break my lease for my peace of mind and security. I can't keep on waking up everytime I hear someone walk up the gardens in the back of the building.
I need advice on what to do next…

I think you have every right to contact your agent and ask them how the negotiations are progressing and what is their time frame for fixing this. If it's a couple of weeks away, you need to tell them that's just not acceptable. This is a serious issue and if they can't provide you with a safe and secure home, you want to be able to break your lease without penalty and find somewhere else that is safe.
