Nothing says “user pays” quite like coin-op laundry machines but they hark back to a whole different era where communal concerns weren’t just commonplace but were at the heart of the way we lived.
Take older blocks with communal washhouses out the back. At some point they might have had big copper tubs where the water was heated by fire.
Then they would have evolved to having a couple of big washing machines and maybe even a giant dryer used by everyone in the block on a strictly controlled rotation.
A few years later, everyone started renovating and some didn’t like the idea of sharing laundry facilities, so they installed washing machines and dryers in their own flats.
But there were still machines in the communal laundry and the people with their own washers didn’t want to pay for the shared machines too, so coin-operated machines were introduced, to be used on a strictly user-pays basis.
Now some owners want rid of the coin-ops but somewhere in all the steam and suds, the paperwork covering the communal laundry has been washed away and the people who want to change the rules don’t know where the rules are so they can change them.
How them away and replacing them with some owners’ machines? But who pays for the electricity? And does the strata scheme have a responsibility to continue providing laundry facilities?
It will all come out in the wash but you can add your own cap of fabric softener HERE.

Alternatively, you can click on the new “Latest Qs and As” Forum button on the top right of a computer screen or the link on the “hamburger” menu on a phone.
Or look at the list of “Your latest questions and answers” under the ads on the right of the page on a computer screen. Or at the bottom, after the ads and stories, on a tablet or phone.
finally, you can go “old school” and go to the Forum Home Page and work your way through the topics there.
Whichever route you take to get there, the best way to keep up to speed with what’s happening is to register (if you haven’t already done so), then login and subscribe for free to the topics that interest you most.
That way you’ll get an alert whenever the discussion moves forward, and you can also chip in with your own comments and questions. Have a look HERE at our instant guide to getting online.
