I have recently moved to Sydney in a sharehouse with 3 other girls. I have signed a lease which is set to expire in May and then renewed for 12 months If I wish to stay past May.
I had virtually inspected this place as I was originally living in Melbourne. Upon moving in I have come to know and (smell) a pet dog which belongs to one of the housemates is not toilet trained and urinates and poo’s all over the house. The owner of the dog (one of the housemates) has refused to do anything about it and has become complacent with the smell and impliedly has asked me to “deal with it”.
As a new addition to the household I think this is completely disgusting and unhygienic and I am not sure what I can do about this situation and what my rights are. First time renting here!
If the other tenant refuses to do anything about the dog mess and what rights do I have?
I don’t want to create any hostility with my housemates given I have just moved in but I also feel objectively I shouldn’t have to put up with this. I also thought of the idea of speaking to my agent and see whether they can come in and do a casual inspection and let everyone know to clean the mess up.
Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA!
