Forum: Have you tried switching it off and on?

The IT Crowd: Roy, Moss and Jen. If only we'd known it was so easy.

It’s been a tricky couple of weeks on the Forum front, with posts failing to post, scary but mostly harmless “critical error” messages appearing and, a couple of times, the whole Flat Chat website falling in a heap.

The solution to all of that turned out to be frustratingly simple. You may recall the brilliant comedy the IT Crowd where help desk computer expert Roy would answer every call with the words ”have you tried switching it off and back on again?”

It wasn’t quite as easy as that for us – many plugins (little internal apps) had to be switched off and back on – but we got there, after paying “experts” to fix it only to find they had no better idea than we did.

The main thing is that it’s all right now – fingers crossed.  But one other lesson I learned was that I really need you guys to let me know when things aren’t working for you.

I often don’t realise that the website isn’t doing its stuff for as it’s supposed to. So thanks to those of you who emailed me to let me know it was all going pear-shaped.

And with that in mind, we have a couple of new questions for you to ponder.

Firstly if a lawyer says something at an AGM that’s a bit suspicious, can you quote them at a tribunal hearing.  AGMs aren’t public meetings and legal advice is supposed to be confidential.  So,could you even bring it up at an NCAT hearing?  That’s HERE.

And one owner is looking to make a price versus service comparison with self-management and a low-cost strata manager.  That’s HERE.

How to ask and answer questions

Anyone can read our posts at any time, but you must be registered to ask or answer questions. However, there are so many easy ways you can search, access, ask questions and reply to others’ queries once you have registered using the green “register and sign in …” box on this page.

The best way may be to click on “Forum: Your Qs & A’s” on the top menu bar or on the drop-down menu (three lines) on the screen on phones and tablets, under the Strata Choice ad. Then click on the topic title that interests you, and off you go.

Alternatively, you can click on the new “Latest Qs and As” Forum button on the top right of a computer screen or the link on the “hamburger” menu on a phone.

Or look at the list of “Your latest questions and answers” under the ads on the right of the page on a computer screen. Or at the bottom, after the ads and stories, on a tablet or phone. Finally, you can go “old school” and go to the Forum Home Page and work your way through the topics there.

Whichever route you take to get there, the best way to keep up to speed with what’s happening is to register (if you haven’t already done so), then login and subscribe for free to the topics that interest you most. That way you’ll get an alert whenever the discussion moves forward, and you can also chip in with your own comments and questions. Have a look HERE at our instant guide to getting online.

PLEASE ... If your property is not in NSW, mention its location (state). Don't identify companies or individuals by name. Don't mention or promote your company or services. Keep acronyms and initials to a minimum. Please, don’t use “quote” unless there is a specific point to which you wish to refer, then highlight (define) that specific passage before you click on "quote". Otherwise just use reply. THANKS.
