Experts say that mixing older people with young ‘uns is beneficial to both but the University of Wollongong is taking it to a new level with its planned seniors living project, which will include a $230m on-campus seven-storey residential aged care facility with a child care centre attached.

According to a story in the Illawarra Mercury, the current plans show the first stage of the residential aged care facility would have 180 beds, with a child care centre.

Stage 2 would include two seniors’ apartment buildings, of eight and nine storeys, designed for independent living with a total of 236 apartments.

The residential care facility would include dedicated teaching and research spaces in what the university has described as a “living lab”.

But not everyone is happy. Staff who have recently suffered major redundancies want to know where the money is coming from, especially since the university recently got its fingers burned in a shared project for student accommodation.
