A group of interested Tasmanian strata owners is getting together to develop a new statewide interest group for mutual support.  Our current formative name is Strata Home Owners of Tasmania (SHOT) Network.  We are keen to hear from other Tasmanian strata owners who would like to join us.  If you would like to make contact with us, please respond to this post or send a note to our email address (shotas.network@gmail.com).  And so feel free to spread the word to other friends in strata in Tassie!

Here is an introduction to what we are about:

“SHOT is in the early stages of being developed as a forum for sharing relevant knowledge with, and providing support for, strata homeowners in Tasmania. It is intended to be a network run by and for its members, comprising owners of residential property under strata title.

Currently, many Tasmanian strata residents have limited information about their rights and the responsibilities of strata living, no local independent support or advice, and no collective voice on proposed changes to strata legislation and/or industry practice. The development of SHOT aims to fill these gaps.

SHOT is intended as an inclusive network of Tasmanian strata owners, for representation of our interests in the reviews and amendments of state legislation and industry practice alongside other parties such as strata managers, conveyancers etc which are currently exercising their constituents’ voices. It is worth noting that the group most directly affected by such reviews and amendments are the owners, yet to date their representation has been at best piecemeal.

A small group of strata owners has been meeting for some months now to explore how we might develop an appropriately constituted Tasmanian strata owners’ network, with a view to affiliating with the Owners’ Corporation Network, a well-established entity originating in NSW but with aspirations and active progress toward being a national network.

This group sees itself not so much as the nucleus of the eventual organisation, but more as a development group bringing the wider network into being.

As such, we propose to become a nominated proxy for the OCN in Tasmania, with Dr Paul Walker as the interim lead and point of contact in our dealings with OCN. We would be aiming throughout to constitute our local network in such a form as to be maximally compatible with OCN’s structure and evolutionary development.

Our immediate local aims are to present ourselves to the relevant arms of government, in particular the Tasmanian ‘Recorder of Titles’, seeking to develop a broadly representative voice in the ongoing legislative review and other relevant fora. An essential first step is one of outreach to a wide constituency of Bodies Corporate and Strata Lot Owners, inviting their engagement in our aims and connecting into our developing network”.

As a followup on this post, @jimmyt53, I wonder if it is worth creating a subforum here for Strata Living in Tasmania.  Our Act and accepted practices are a bit different to those in other States, and it might be useful for Taswegians to have a separate place for discussions.    We are setting up our own online forum but current FlatChat subscribers might appreciate a spot on this forum.
