Here in NSW, because of Covid-19, the state government is providing a way for businesses to register (and some have to) and get a “QR” code which lets visitors log on in a secure manner using a smart phone or tablet, and records their details in case there’s a need to trace a Covid-19 infection. The website indicates that “organisations” as well as businesses can do this, and the examples mention churches and accommodation, which are similar to residential strata buildings.

I’d like to know if a strata residential building has registered and is using the NSW QR code system?

If so, what are the advantages and disadvantages?

I would think this system would be useful for logging in contractors, delivery people, and other visitors. Some residents would probably be more comfortable letting workers into their apartments if they have registered. The system has privacy protections, and is administered by the government, so people would be comfortable using it, I suspect. And for visitors without smartphones, there would be a paper form on the notice board – a sample is downloadable from that link.

Getting a QR Code only seems to require completing a Covid-19 Safety Plan for the building, which seems a good idea in any case.

Any thoughts or experiences to share?

Strata blocks are not mandated to adopt the use of QR code’s or any method of logging visitors.

So it’s purely up to the Owners Corporation as to whether this is adopted.
The hole that I see is that unless one appoints a “COVID Marshall” that monitors who visits, then compliance will be scattered as many visitors will choose to not cooperate.

So far as I can recall strata blocks have not been prominent in the spread of COVID 19.

I agree.  There would be widespread non-compliance which would render the process pointless, really.  I suppose strata schemes could pass by-laws demanding some form of registration for tradies, but then if they had the means to enforce that (concierges etc) then they would know who was coming in and out anyway.

I thnk there would be so many privacy issues around ordinary guests coming and going, you’d be unlikely to get any of the by-laws required for that through a general meeting.
