Hi All. Self managed four lot Strata in N.S.W.
Quite some time ago (a few years) my neighbours cat snuck into my Unit through an open window without my knowledge and promptly hid itself from view sometime before I locked up and left for a long weekend getaway.
During this weekend my neighbour searching for their cat discovered it on the wrong side of my front door.
As later reported, ‘in a distressed state clawing away at my carpet and meowing forlornly’. Fearing for the feline’s health and unable to contact me, they made the decision to break down the door.
In the aftermath, they agreed to organise the repair, including replacing the damaged door. A day or two later, on returning from work one evening, I discovered the job done except but for an unexpected anomaly. The new door was of ‘solid core’ construction where as the original was ‘hollow core’.
I don’t recall being given a justification for this change but I remember having it explained that it was actually advantageous having it in the event of a fire.
Fast Forward a few years …..the original door hinges have now finally succumbed to the stress of the substantial extra weight of this solid core door.
I’ve been informed that the hinges would need to be upgraded in number as well as size, to accommodate the weight. At the moment, the door can’t be opened, being off its hinges. I use the backdoor. I’d rather just like a hollow core door back , like everyone else here.
The neighbours and their misbehaving cat are long gone. Under the circumstances described, should I expect the Owners Corporation to remedy this situation?

The front door of your unit is common property and the Owners Corp has a responsibility to make sure it is fire safe and secure. Your issue with getting a hollow door (apart frm persuading the other three owners) is that it may not be fire safe.

I am empathetic to anyone experiencing an uncontained neighbours cat coming onto their property. I have the same issue at the moment and if I could catch it, I’d give it a ride in my car to a place far, far away……..
