On school afternoons, three 15-year-old boys occupy the public footpath outside our block. They come equipped with large thickshakes from the nearby 7-11. They consume the thickshakes slowly while talking about nothing in loud voices. The empty thickshake containers get hurled into nearby gardens or drains, sometimes ours. After loitering for at least an hour, the boys walk away down the street to where their homes probably are. Sometimes they perform petty vandalism such as twisting parking signs in their bases.
One of our residents, whose windows overlook the area, is heartily sick of the noise and would like the boys to go away. What can be done?
And what on earth is wrong at their homes so that they don’t want to go there until later?

Talking loudly in public is not a crime but littering is. The NSW government has made it easier to report littering through its “Report a Tosser” app, part of its“Hey Tosser!” campaign. The app is available for download on both iOS and Android devices. It allows you to report littering incidents in real-time, providing details such as the location and type of litter. There’s more information on this website. A visit from the local council or cops will probably move them on.

30 years ago I lived near a McDonalds that backed onto a carpark. A group of teens regularly hung around the back door of the McDonalds, leaving their fast food wrappers scattered about when they left. The store manager rigged up a speaker and started playing classical music (loudly) whenever the kids appeared. Problem solved. They found somewhere else to hang out. If your friend’s window opens, I suggest she makes use of Spotify or ABC Classical Radio and treats the street to a short concert. Perhaps she’ll have similar success.

Another way is to go to their school and speak to the principal. Let them know in a quiet unemotional way what the problem is and ask if they can help stop the problem.
