A caller to the Flat Chat spot on the James Valentine radio show last week unearthed a grubby little scheme by an Inner West real estate agent.

Our  listener had received notice of a huge rise in his rent so, posing as a prospective landlord, he called the estate agent and asked a few questions.

The manager proudly told him they were running a contest to see which agent could raise his properties’ rents by the most. Try-on letters were being sent out to see how far tenants would go.

The tenant told his landlord him about this and now the owner has taken his business elsewhere.

Bu in the meantime these sick puppies are bringing despair to people who may not have the street smarts or connections our Flatchatter enjoys.

This scheme may be a great incentive for the sales team but it shows a massive disregard for their tenants.

OK, it’s a cruel world and if you can’t afford the ticket you shouldn’t be on the bus.

But while ego-boosting, commission-inflating games like this might keep the sales team fired up, the try-on letters could also be the last straw for tenants already struggling to make ends meet.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.
