I’m in Sydney NSW. In my building we got a 12-metre pool it’s pretty average outdoor pool.

I want too put it to the (OC) about adding solar heating. How much does solar heating cost for say a stock-standard 12m outdoor pool? 

Any quotes anyone know.

I have no idea about the cost, sorry. Others might have recent experience. 

My comment is advice to do as much of your own research as you can. Make it really easy for the EC to see this is not just a good idea to get behind but a clearly thought out proposal with everything considered such as on-going maintenance costs (or savings on current heating costs), a realistic assessment of how long the swimming season would be extended and so on. Don’t assume others will see it as obviously a good idea as it might seem to you. Find a few allies! Point out the increase in property values for those who couldn’t care less about having better shared, community facilities.

Yeah, best of luck with that.  I tried to get our EC to put photo-electric solar panels on our roof to generate electricity, partly to heat our pool.  Their response: “It would cost more to pump the water on to the roof where it would be heated than we would save in gas bills.” Geniuses, every one of them!

Ha Ha a funny response at least they didn’t make you lose some sense of humour. 

Peter C and Jimmy T, both right the property values and quailty of life indicators are obvious. Amazes me how more strata places don’t get solar heating for the outdoor pools. Having access to a pool only 6 months a year(spring/summer), is pretty useless. I have even thought about lobbying to close down the pool, as outdoor pools costs a lot for so little use. 

Funny how they upgraded security on the swimming pool and the building, you now need a digital swipe tag to get access to the pool, and they replaced the old 1970’s gates with modern 2000’s glass fencing.  

Yet can’t be bothered to spend any cash on solar heating, when there’s nothing to steal in the swimming pool. Maybe the tosh argument was so we don’t get non-residents in the street to swim in it. Well I’d rather they spent it on solar heating, than flash security when there’s nothing to steal.

A wild guess but could it have been to make the pool compliant with new regulations, without which you and your neighbours wouldn’t be able to sell or lease your units?  Just a thought …

To get back to your original question, I heard someone talking on the radio the other day about “solar landfill” – cheap units from overseas that can’t cope with Australian weather conditions.  So I would tread carefully and get at least three quotes.
