My neighbours are fitness gurus and wake me at 5.45 every morning when they make breakfast. It was fine until the reno they did when they moved the kitchen bench to run along my bedroom wall. Now every morning I hear cupboards, clanging and general commotion. Tried sleep earphones, but they dont work and bc of my work I can’t go to bed at 9.30 to match them to get my 8 hours. Going a bit sleep deprived crazy! Suggestions?

Well, they have clearly done something to common property walls and have either done it without permission or done it badly. You could ask them to do something about the cupboard doors to cut down the noise but if that fails, the wall belongs to the owners corp so they should be brought in to demand it be fixed.

Before you ask the neighbours to do anything, make sure what you request will help. You might need expert advice. I’d guess you can’t afford the big-name consultants. Do you know anyone who’s worked in constructing a boardroom which had to be insulated from sound from the surrounding offices? Do you know anyone who is experienced with acoustic underlays for vinyl flooring? What about an engineering student?

I think a simple request to ask them to stop slamming cupboard doors, in the first instance, wouldn’t require expert help. People don’t know how loud they sound in your apartment until you tell them. It’s when they respond negatively that you call in the cavalry.
