Tropical Cyclone Alfred off the Queensland coast on Tuesday afternoon.

Strata buildings, especially townhouses, are not immune from the devastating effects of cyclones, and you need to get your strata block ready for Cyclone Alfred … or the next one coming your way.

As Cyclone Alfred hurtled towards the between the Northen Rivers of NSW and Queensland’s Sunshine coast on Tuesday night, our sponsors Strata Community Insurance issued a storm emergency plan for strata communities, with a handy fact sheet that can be downloaded from their website and printed for safe keeping, for the next extreme weather event, if not this one.

BE SAFE

If you require urgent assistance, contact the State Emergency Services (SES) on 132 500 or for updates and detailed information go to www.ses.org.au.

If you have any electrical risks call Energex on 13 19 62, Essential Energy on 13 20 80 or your local electrical supplier.

If the situation is a life-threatening emergency, always call 000.

BE PREPARED

  • Familiarise yourself with your state or local council’s emergency plan and have an evacuation strategy, including safest exits, meeting points and best communication methods.
  • Ensure all windows and doors are property sealed and secure. Know when and how to turn off main supply for water, power and gas.
  • Prepare an emergency kit that includes essential items such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit and necessary medications.

COMMON AREAS

  • Ensure the roof is well maintained and clear of debris. A damaged roof could lead to water leakage during heavy rainfall and high winds.
  • Gutters, downpipes and drains should be clear of debris to allow for proper water drainage.
  • Trim trees and shrubs that overhang or threaten powerlines or the building. Any dead trees or branches should be removed.
  • Secure or store all outdoor items from your balcony or common area that could be picked up by high winds and cause damage.
  • This includes items such as outdoor furniture, pot plants, garbage bins and trampolines.
  • Protect your electronic devices from power surges by using surge protectors or turning them off if not in use.

AFTER A STORM

  • Enquire with other residents to see if they are okay.
  • Take note of any building damage and, if internal, in what room and unit number (e.g. ceiling in lounge room in unit 1).
  • Take notes or photos of any damage.
  • Keep an eye out for any safety hazards – such as fallen trees, power lines or wet electronic equipment.

CLAIMS

Initiate a claim promptly, attaching any supporting documents such as invoices, receipts or photos. For assistance with this you can SCInsurance us on 1300 SCINSURE (1300 724 678) to submit your claim with one of their representatives.

If Owners or Occupiers of an Insured Building require emergency assistance, they can reach Strata Community Insurance directly on 1300 724 678. For after-hours emergencies, calls will divert to ARC Projects for immediate assistance in appointing necessary trades.

Note: Owners or Occupiers do not have authority to proceed with repairs unless it involves reasonable emergency repairs to minimise insured Loss or Damage under the policy.
