If there was a society for the prevention of cruelty to plants, here at Flat Chat Central we would long ago have been led off in chains while our wilting pot plants were rushed to a foster nursery for care and recuperation.

We are so bad at looking after plants that for a short spell we resorted to sticking plastic fakes in our balcony planters.

To be fair – as with just about anything else to do with strata living – bringing in a professional for advice on which plants to use and how to keep them alive has made a world of difference.

And it’s worth making the effort.  Just the presence of plants in and around your home is good for your physical health and caring for them can be a calming salve for your sanity.

Free webinar

With that in mind, the Owners Corporation Network (OCN) is hosting a free webinar next Wednesday (August 25) lunchtime on how to “grow your wellbeing”.

“With most of us spending more time at home, finding ways to support our wellbeing is essential,” says the OCN Media release on the event which is supported by the City of Sydney.

“This webinar will look at how plants can make our homes and ourselves healthier – including ways indoor plants can be beneficial and how you can grow fresh produce and herbs on a windowsill, wall, balcony, patio or in common garden areas.

“OCN is delighted to have two leading experts in the benefits of urban greening presenting for this live webinar that will give you insights into how plants improve air quality, reduce stress levels, support our immune system and help us flourish.”

Dr Dominque Hesis chair of the board of Greenfleet, and a leading regenerative development thinker, educator, author and researcher.

Previously founding board member of the Living Futures Institute of Australia and former head of the Melbourne University Thrive Hub, Dominique also co-developed an app, Plant Life Balance, that helps users discover the optimum number and species of plants to make indoor spaces healthier.

Brendan Condonis Managing Director of ecosystems restoration company Australian Ecosystems, co-founder of Melbourne SkyFarm, founder of net-zero community The Cape at Cape Paterson in Victoria and Director of Biofilta, which designs and manufactures innovative, water-efficient urban agricultural systems including wall planters and raised beds.

The Zoom webinar is from 1pm to 2pm on Wednesday, August 25, and you can register using THIS LINK.

Buying an apartment?

While you’re logging in to the laptop, if you are more interested in buying a new home – the plants can follow – Strata Skills 101 (also supported by City of Sydney) has published a short video all about buying a strata property, what to look for and what to avoid.

Backing up this initiative, they have recruited a couple of the presenters to appear in live webinars  where they will answer questions emailed to Strata Skills 101 or posted on their website.

The first of the free webinars is on Wednesday, August 25 at 12 noon (just before the OCN wellbeing session), and will feature James Moir, a defects lawyer with Madison Marcus (click here to register).

Two days later on Friday, August 27, again at 12 noon,  Allison McKnight of Strata Property Inspections will answer your questions about what to look out for when buying a unit (click here to register) .

You can watch the video and post your questions via links at the Strata Skills 101 website.
