Back in the old Wild West (of America, not Australia) they had what they called “range wars” – they broke out when farmers, who legitimately owned chunks of land, would fence them off
The problem was, these were often on cattle trails, along which cowboys would drive their cattle … until they hit the fences.
These days, in Australian strata, the cowboys are owners who, for instance, can’t see why the property outside their units should be accessible to anyone else, so up go the fences.
But later arrivals to the strata schemes can see that bylaws have been broken, land has been grabbed and those fences really need to go.
But how can you put things to right without everybody treating you like an outlaw? And what do you do when a bamboo fence planted by one owner has grown so high that it cuts out light to your apartment? That’s all HERE.
Things have got seriously out of shape when your committee are spending more on legal fees to get things fixed than the cost of the actual repair.
One Flatchatter is at their wits’ ends with all the money they were paid for defect repairs now being spent on lawyers. Now they’re wondering if it’s worth going to NCAT to have their committee sacked and replaced by a compulsory strata manager. That’s HERE.
And finally, the topic of the week – Queensland caretaker management rights. This Flatchatter has watched their 10-year management contract swell to 30 years, the actual managers have changed three times and been granted eight extensions.
And all of this is because too many owners don’t want to rock the boat or, in fact, don’t realise that they are able to make choices. You can find that post HERE.
How to ask and answer questions
Anyone can read our posts anytime but you have to be registered to ask or answer questions. However, there are several easy ways you can search, access, ask questions and reply to others’ queries once you have registered.
The best way these days may be to click on “Forum: Your Qs & A’s” on the top menu bar on a computer screen or on the drop-down menu (three lines) on the right of the screen on phones and tablets, under the Strata Choice ad. Then click on the topic title that interests you, and off you go.
Alternatively, you can look at the list of “Your latest questions and answers” under the ads on the right of the page on a computer screen. Or at the bottom, after the ads and stories, on a tablet or phone.
Or you can go “old school” and go to the Forum Home Page and work your way through the topics there. Whichever route you take to get there, the best way to keep up to speed with what’s happening is to register (if you haven’t already done so), then login and subscribe for free to the topics that interest you most.
That way you’ll get an alert whenever the discussion moves forward, and you can also chip in with your own comments and questions. Have a look HERE at our instant guide to getting online.
