A small flat with a fold-out kitchen is turning potential buyers’ heads with its stylish space-saving features.

With echoes of the ‘tiny house’ movement, the architect-renovated flat in Fitzroy, Melbourne, fits both the available space and the original philosophy behind the 1930s Cairo Flats complex which was created with an ethos of “maximum amenity in minimum space”, according to a story in Realestate.com.au.

And despite the website’s picture caption saying the apartment “has a fold-out kitchen that might just be the future for generation Uber Eats,” according to the architect and current owner Nicholas Agius, that’s not really the point.

“While in apartments that small people assume you are reheating food, my partner is an accomplished cook and she never had any issue cooking all sorts of things in there,” he told the website.

The award-winning property has based its functional design on the space-saving compromises employed in caravans and boats, with a philosophy that the facilities are there when you need them but, like the slide-out bookshelves cum room divider, can be tucked away when you don’t need them.

That’s a plan for cash-strapped home buyers; purchase the smallest flat in an older block and spend what you save on a genius designer reno.
