Forum: ‘Free’ votes give developer total control

Two business people meeting in an isolated place.

We have a few fascinating questions on the Forum this week but the most intriguing one concerns a new, staged development where the developer has managed to hang on to the voting power of the un-built units without paying the levies for them.

Is that legal, asks our Flatchatter, who is rightly miffed that said developer has used his powers to elect himself and a family member to the offices of the strata committee without paying for the voting privileges he now wields.

You can read the legal opinion on that HERE.

And then there’s the apartment owner who’s committee doesn’t want to even discuss the common property maintenance access hatch in his bathroom that they have unofficially decided to permanently close.

He wants to renovate the bathroom – but what happens to his cupboards, bath and tiles if they’re in the way, there’s a plumbing emergency and they need access in a hurry?

You can put in your ten cents worth on that HERE

Elsewhere in the Forum

  • Druggies are ruining or lives and damaging common property.  What can we do? That’s HERE.
  • We have strict and stringent flooring by-laws but the committee is approving major changes “on the nod”.  That’s HERE.
  • Must owners be informed that there are NCAT actions being taken against the committee?  That’s HERE.
  • Can the committee allocate a visitor parking space for the use of one owner, and without compensation?  That’s HERE
  • What ever happened to Fair Trading’s Strata Living guide? That’s HERE.

How to ask and answer questions

Anyone can read our posts any time but you have to be registered to ask or answer questions.

However, there are several easy ways you can search, access, ask questions and reply to others’ queries once you have registered.

The best way these days may be to click on “Forum: Your Qs & A’s” on the top menu bar on a computer screen or on the drop-down menu (three lines) on the right of the screen on phones and tablets, under the Strata Choice ad.

Then click on the topic title that interests you, and off you go.

Alternatively, you can look at the list of “Your latest questions and answers” under the ads on the right of the page on a computer screen. Or at the bottom, after the ads and stories, on a tablet or phone.

Or you can go “old school” and go to the Forum Home Page and work your way through the topics there.

Whichever route you take to get there, the best way to keep up to speed with what’s happening is to register (if you haven’t already done so), then login and subscribe for free to the topics that interest you most.

That way you’ll get an alert whenever the discussion moves forward, and you can also chip in with your own comments and questions.  Have a look HERE at our instant guide to getting online.
