Forum: TV strata report misses the point, as usual

Burnout headache, children running and parents on living room sofa with migraine from hyper active kids. Mental health problem, family stress and senior grandparents tired from babysitting adhd girl

Every time tabloid newspapers or TV magazine news show try to get into a strata issues, they invariably get it wrong.

For instance, it has been alleged that residents in a Sydney strata scheme have been fined by “the strata” because their kids make too much noise – screaming, crying and slamming doors – while their dog is also allegedly disturbing neighbours by barking.

According to a track on tabloid TV news magazine  A Current Affair, sent to us by a Flatchat regular, the family has been fined $250 by “the strata” which will accrue 10 per cent penalty interest if they don’t pay it.

Just to get things straight, “the strata” can’t fine anybody any amount for anything. Only the tribunal can do that and then only if they find a by-law has been breached, the appropriate warning has been issued and the breach has continued.

The 10 per cent penalty interest referred to, applies for the year, so in this case it would amount to 50 cents a week on top of the $250 fine.

You feel for the family in this story – living with grandma when they’d rather be in their own home – but that doesn’t mean they can ignore the rules of the building.

It’s not their fault, but my immediate response to the story might seem tough to the family concerned and intolerant of lazy journalists.  This kind of cheap-shot journalism just makes matters worse. You can find the original tip-off HERE.
